Traditional associations of some beads
In Hindu tradition, each mukhi is linked with a deity. The 1 Mukhi bead is associated with Lord Shiva. The 7 Mukhi is traditionally associated with Mahalakshmi, and the 9 Mukhi with Maa Durga.

Wearing or keeping a single bead
Many devotees wear a single Rudraksha bead as a pendant on a thread or chain. Others keep it in the puja room. Some first wear a new bead on a Monday, a day associated with Lord Shiva, after a short prayer.
