A murti is what turns a shelf into a mandir. Whether you are setting up worship in a new home, replacing a chipped idol, or choosing a gift that will actually be kept, the decision comes down to three things: which deity, what material, and what size will suit the space you have. Choosing a murti

• Material: brass is the traditional choice and the only one that comfortably takes daily abhishek; resin allows larger, more detailed murtis at lower cost but must be kept dry; Karungali ebony is hand-carved and unique to each piece.
• Size: measure the shelf before ordering — a murti that crowds the mandir is the commonest regret.
• Consistency: murtis of similar height and finish sit together far better than a mismatched group.
• Placement: traditionally kept raised and clean, facing east or north, not directly on the floor.
